Some weeks just leave you itching for a vacation, but life doesn’t always allow you to drop and take a week-long vacation whenever you want. That doesn’t mean you can’t take advantage of the weekends though. Whether you’re looking to soak up some rays at the beach, go for a hike, enjoy a concert, or tour nearby breweries, there are a number of weekend roads trips around San Antonio that are definitely doable. Here are some of our top picks to help you plan your next weekend getaway.
About an hour and a half drive east, Shiner, TX, home of Shiner beer, is the perfect place to get away for a weekend or even just a day trip. You can take a free tour of the Spoetzel Brewery (where Shiner beer is brewed), although you’ll have to go on a long weekend. The brewery is only open Monday-Friday. It does include free beer samplings at the end of the tour, though. If you’re staying overnight, make reservations at The Old Kasper House Victorian Inn for a true Shiner experience. Be sure to also check out the Shiner Smokehouse, Antiques, Art and Beer, and stop by Saints Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church to admire its unique Romanesque architecture and stained glass windows imported from Germany on your way out of town.
Although Texas is a big state, we’re fortunate to be just under 3 hours from the coast. Arguably the best beach town within driving distance of San Antonio, Port Aransas has great seafood, plenty of beach access, and great dive bars to boot (be sure to checkout Shorty’s). There are a number of hotels and condos you can stay in, the Mayan Princess is probably the most well known.
Goliad State Park
Goliad State Park has plentiful grounds for camping and is located along the San Antonio River. The park grounds contains a refurnished restoration of a Spanish Colonial Era Mission. Activities include camping, picnicking, hiking, fishing, nature study, and historical study. The park offers a floating dock and river access for kayaks and canoes, and is a take-out point for the Goliad Paddling Trail.You can also hike over to tour the ruins of the 1750s Mission Rosario State Historic Site. Goliad State Park is just under a two-hour drive from San Antonio, and is less likely to be crowded.
Garner State Park
Known for its hiking, swimming, and camping, Garner State Park is one of the most visited state campgrounds in Texas, with about 350,000 campers each year. It’s also known for its large outdoor pavilion, and hosts dances throughout the summer. Visitors can rent paddle boats, kayaks, and inner tubes, as well as tables, barbecue pits, heaters and fans. The park’s concessionaire operates a tube shuttle and putt-putt golf course during busy seasons.
If you’re looking for a closer place to spend your weekend, Fredricksburg is full of hill country charm. Stroll along Main Street for an afternoon of antique and boutique shopping, and dine at The Auslander for a full German food experience. Enchanted Rock is also worth a visit while you’re there. And if you’re up for it, check out the LBJ Ranch on your way back to town. Stay at the Sugarberry Inn for a romantic cottage getaway.
If live music and the bustling city are more your style, then take a little jaunt on up to Austin. From college football to the lively night scene, you won’t have any trouble filling up your weekend in the live music capitol of the world. And don’t forget the BBQ. Yep, it’s that good!
