It’s Fiesta time in San Antonio! This 10-day city-wide Party with a Purpose is all about fun and raising money for local non-profits. Pick your favorite events to attend and enjoy this very San Antonio annual celebration. We rounded up 5 things that you must do at Fiesta.
Kick It Off at Fiesta-Fiesta
Fiesta-Fiesta is the official opening of Fiesta 2018! It’s a chance to see all of the Official Fiesta Royalty, find medals at Pin Pandemonium, and break cascarones on the heads of your fiesta friends! This year’s entertainment headliner is Chris Perez, husband of the late Selena Quintanilla. Stay until the end for the fireworks show.
Chicken on a Stick
There is a lot of great food that you will find at Fiesta – puffy tacos, nachos, turkey legs, funnel cakes, etc. The one must-have Fiesta food is Chicken on a Stick. It’s pretty simple – a breaded fried chicken on a stick and it’s even better with a jalapeño on top. You can find this at most major Fiesta festivals.
No one is 100% sure of where this tradition of wearing medals during Fiesta began. The most common story is that one of the Fiesta Kings would pass out coins and people began to put holes in these coins and hang them on a string to wear around their necks. Today, Fiesta medals are super creative and highly coveted. This year would be the great year to start your own collection. Many of them are very limited-edition.
Take a Photo in Front of Los Otros Murals
Los Otros is a street art duo consisting of artist Shek Vega, and Nik Soupe. They have painted some of San Antonio’s most creative murals. 2018 is the second year that they are working with the Fiesta Commission to create beautiful wall murals in celebration of Fiesta. You can find them at the Fiesta store, on the side of High Tones, and on the St. Mary’s strip. Get there and get your selfies!
Attend the Parades
There are three major parades that are official Fiesta events that go right through downtown San Antonio. Two are at night and one is a river parade. You must attend them all! You will see all the Fiesta Royal Courts, local and regional marching bands, and so much more. The Texas Cavaliers River Parade is on Monday, April 23; the Battle of Flowers is Friday, April 27; and, the Flambeau Parade is at night on Saturday, April 28.
